Blessed are the eyes that see the things we see

Newhaven

2023

‘Following Ravilious’ was a free public art trail of billboards in Newhaven, East Sussex. Commissioned by and Towner Gallery and Creative Newhaven. It featured Eric Ravilious’ paintings of Newhaven sitting beside responses from contemporary artists inspired by the artist and the modern Newhaven landscape.

This work entitled ‘Blessed are the eyes that see what we see’ was adapted from the biblical inscription on the gravestone that Ravilious shares with his wife, artist Tirzah Garwood and is paired with the 1934 Ravilious painting ‘James and the Foremost Prince’. The artworks were both sited on Denton Island in Newhaven. In the background can be seen the incinerator of the Newhaven Energy Recovery Centre that processes household waste that cannot be reused, composted or recycled and generates electricity from it.
